How soon is too soon for engagement photos? ›

Ideally, scheduling your engagement session with your photographer should happen within a 6-9 month window before your wedding day. I've found this to be the sweet spot! Most couples choose to send their save the dates around 6 months before the big day.

Choose light, soft, neutral tones.

This is totally a personal preference, but my style of photography lends itself best to lighter, airier tones — like white, beige, and taupe — and pastels — like dusty blue, blush, etc. I find that neutral outfits are so romantic and timeless, and help to keep the focus on you!

For an hour long engagement shoot I would probably expect around 50-150 images depending on the experience level of your photographer and the cost of the session. We personally deliver on the higher end with our goal being to deliver a variety of types of images without duplicates.

Call it whatever you want; a connection session or forever session is an engagement shoot. Different terms are flying around, but they come down to the same thing being a portrait shoot. A wedding day is a big portrait shoot known as a wedding day!

Some couples love an excuse to go all out on a fun, dressed up outfit. Others prefer a more casual, but polished look. It is entirely up to you, but most of my couples choose to wear two outfits at their engagement session. One “us on a cute, casual date” outfit and one more formal outfit.

Proposing at six months of dating doesn't necessarily mean it's too soon to propose, but many relationship experts warn that getting engaged this early could mean you're getting engaged in the honeymoon phase of your relationship.

01 Avoid Small, Close Prints , Patterns and Logos

These tend to not photograph as well. Staying away from small, tight stripes and prints will save your engagement photos! Logos distract from the subject and relationships (aka you & your love story!). Instead, wear solid colored pieces that compliment each other!

Don't wear any heavy jewelry or clothing near your face

If you wear anything too busy or heavy it will distract. Keep your earrings simple, like studs or dainty hoops. And don't wear shirts, jackets, or scarves that are too bulky around your neck.

If you have a stunning statement neckline or intricate earrings, an updo can help showcase those details. On the other hand, if you have a bohemian-style dress or plan to wear floral accessories, wearing your hair down with loose curls or a braid can complement the overall look.

Golden hour is the prime time we try to shoot. The light is “soft” and you get a warm, golden glow to your photos, halo hair lights, and evenly lit skin. For example, today's golden hour (I'm writing this on September 30) is from 5:52 pm to 6:47 pm. Sunset is at 6:30.

Timing is Everything: The best time to take engagement photos is about one month after getting engaged. This timeframe allows you enough time to find the perfect photographer, plan your outfits, and choose a beautiful location for your session. However, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question.

It's important to note that my usual turnaround time for engagement photos is around two weeks but it can be up to four during wedding season. If you would like to use the photos for a guestbook, canvas or other printed item you should also factor in the producing company's delivery time as well.

On average, you can expect to receive your complete collection of wedding photos anywhere from four to 12 weeks post-wedding. This timeline can vary based on the season and how busy your wedding photographer is at the time of your wedding.
